Where to stay in Ghana

Region by region, from Accra's business hotels to guesthouses in the Volta hills and lodges in the savannah, and what your money really buys.

The truth about stars and photos

Star ratings in Ghana tell you less than you think. A "four-star" hotel in a regional town may have tired rooms and an unreliable pool, while a modest guesthouse run by a careful owner can be spotless and calm. Online photos are often years old, taken on opening day, and the generator, the water tank and the noise from the bar next door never appear in them.

Price and quality do not always match, in either direction. Accra is expensive for what you get; regional towns can be very good value. Read recent reviews, not the average score, and look for comments about power, water and noise.

What to ask before you book

  • Is there a generator, and does it run the air conditioning or only the lights?
  • Is there a water tank? Mains water can stop for days in some towns.
  • Air conditioning or fan, and are there mosquito nets or screened windows?
  • Is breakfast included, and what is it?
  • Security: is there a guard and a locked compound at night?
  • Noise: is there a bar, church or mosque right next door? All three can be loud at different hours.
  • Payment: cards accepted, or cash and mobile money only?
  • Airport pick-up for your first night: what does it cost?

Accra

Book your first nights here before you fly. Where you stay in Accra shapes your days, because traffic makes crossing the city slow.

  • Airport Residential and Cantonments: close to the airport, quieter, with many mid-range and business hotels. Easy for a first or last night.
  • Osu and Labone: restaurants, bars, nightlife and Oxford Street. Lively and central for sightseeing; noisy at weekends.
  • East Legon: residential, popular with returning diaspora families, malls nearby, but further from the old town.
  • Kokrobite and the coast west of Accra: budget beach lodges and a backpacker crowd, but a long trip into the city.

For something different, Jamestown and the old city are where Accra's history sits: the forts, the lighthouse and Brazil House. Most visitors sleep elsewhere and visit by day.

Cape Coast and Elmina

The heart of Ghana's history, and the place most UK visitors go after Accra. Both towns have hotels, guesthouses and beach resorts along the coast between them. Staying here for two or three nights lets you see Cape Coast Castle, Elmina Castle and Kakum National Park without rushing.

Beach resorts look idyllic in photos; ask whether the beach in front is clean and safe to swim, because the Atlantic here is strong. During the Fetu Afahye festival and the December season, rooms fill up early.

The western coast

West of Takoradi the coast quietens down: Busua, Dixcove, Akwidaa and Princes Town have beach lodges and eco-resorts that range from simple and charming to tired and overpriced. It is the best stretch for a slow beach week, with forts around every bay. Takoradi itself has business hotels for the oil industry, convenient but not where you come to relax.

Kumasi and the Ashanti Region

Kumasi, the Asante capital, has a wide range of hotels from international chains to simple guesthouses. Stay central if you want Manhyia Palace, Kejetia market and the craft villages of Bonwire, Ntonso and Ahwiaa as day trips. Lake Bosomtwe, south-east of the city, has a few lakeside lodges for a quieter night or two.

The Volta Region

Hills, waterfalls and the cooler air of the highlands. Ho, the regional capital, has hotels for business travellers; Hohoe and the villages around Wli Falls, Amedzofe and Tafi Atome have simple guesthouses and eco-lodges. Expect basic comfort, real warmth and early nights. Akosombo, at the dam, has hotels with views over Lake Volta.

The north

Tamale is the hub of the north, with hotels for business travellers and NGO staff. Beyond it, choice drops sharply. Mole National Park has lodges inside the park, and booking ahead is essential in the dry season. In Bolgatanga, Wa and the Upper East and Upper West, accommodation is simple; check that a room has a fan or air conditioning that actually works, because the northern heat is serious.

Peak dates: book early

December is the hardest month to find a good room at a fair price, especially in Accra and on the coast. Easter, the big festivals and the Independence Day period around 6 March are close behind. In 2027, with Ghana marking seventy years of independence, expect March to be fully booked months ahead.
