Privacy policy and cookies

What personal data this website collects, why, how long we keep it, and your rights under UK data protection law. In plain English.

Who we are

GhanaNet.co.uk is an independent information website about Ghana, operated by Remo Kurka. For the purposes of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018, we are the data controller for personal data collected through this website.

We do not sell personal data, and we do not show Google advertising.

What we collect

When you contact us

If you use the contact form or email us, we receive your name, your email address and whatever you choose to write in your message.

When you visit the site

Like every website, our hosting server automatically records technical information when pages are requested: your IP address, browser type, the pages visited, the time of the visit and the referring page. These server logs are used for security and to keep the site working.

What we do not collect

We do not run user accounts, take payments or ask you for sensitive personal information. Please do not send us passport numbers, bank details or similar information by email.

Why we use it, and on what legal basis

  • To reply to your message: our legitimate interest in answering enquiries, or steps you have asked us to take.
  • To keep the website secure and working: our legitimate interest in protecting the site and fixing problems.
  • Non-essential cookies set by third-party services (see below): your consent, where required.

We will not add you to any mailing list or use your details for marketing.

Third-party services

Hosting

The website is hosted on servers provided by our hosting company, which processes server data on our behalf.

Viator tour widgets

Some pages show bookable tours from Viator, a Tripadvisor company. The widget is loaded from Viator's servers and may set cookies or collect information about your visit. If you click through and book, Viator handles your booking and payment under its own privacy policy, and we may receive a commission. We do not receive your booking or payment details.

Expedia

Some pages link to Expedia through an affiliate link. If you click it, Expedia may set cookies to record that you came from our site. Any booking is made directly with Expedia under its own privacy policy.

Links to other websites

We link to many other sites, including our own network and official sources. Once you leave this site, the other site's privacy policy applies.

International transfers: Viator and Expedia are based outside the UK, mainly in the United States. Data they collect may be processed there under their own safeguards.

Cookies

Cookies are small files stored by your browser. This website uses:

  • Strictly necessary cookies that the website platform may need to work properly. These do not require consent.
  • Third-party cookies from the Viator widget and the Expedia link, set by those companies when their content loads or when you click through.

You can block or delete cookies at any time in your browser settings. Blocking third-party cookies will not stop you reading this website, though tour widgets may not display fully.

How long we keep your data

  • Emails and contact form messages: for as long as needed to deal with your enquiry, and normally no longer than two years.
  • Server logs: for a limited period set by our hosting provider, then deleted automatically.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to:

  • ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you
  • ask us to correct inaccurate data
  • ask us to delete your data
  • object to, or ask us to restrict, how we use your data
  • withdraw consent at any time, where we rely on consent

To use any of these rights, email travel@ghananet.co.uk. We will reply within one month.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk. We would appreciate the chance to put things right first.

Children

This website is intended for adults planning travel. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when the website or the law changes. The date below shows the latest version.
