Real photographs, not postcards. Markets at dawn, fishing canoes in the surf, forts in decay, festivals, roadsides and everyday life, taken over more than two decades of travelling the country.
Most images of Ghana online come from one of two places: glossy tourism promotion, where every beach is empty and every hotel is new, or news photography, where the country only appears when something goes wrong. Neither shows the Ghana that visitors actually find.
The photographs on this site are different. They show the country as it is: crowded trotro stations and quiet villages, beautiful forts and crumbling ones, festivals in full colour and the ordinary mornings in between. Some of the places pictured have changed since; some of the objects photographed in museums are no longer on display. That makes the archive a record, not just an illustration.
The photography on GhanaNet.co.uk and across the ghana-net.com network is by Remo Kurka, who has documented Ghana since the network went online in December 2000. His work has been published by The Guardian, Der Tagesspiegel and Discover Britain, among others.
